Thoughts About Digital Anemometers

Some people think wind turbines are dangerous due to winds and storms could run dangerously fast. This is not true: all large wind turbines are equipped with brakes that prevent rotate if the wind blows too hard (and integrated anemometer to measure the speed too). But there is no doubt that wind turbines spin faster and produce more electricity, the stronger the wind blows. You have no idea of how an anemometer base could work.

Suppose that you build yourself a table model turbine and connect it to an electric generator (actually an electric motor wired backwards, so it is an electric current when you turn around its central axis). The faster the blades turn, the faster the alternator spins, and the electrical current will produce. So if you measure the current, you have a fundamental way to measure wind speed. You have to calibrate an instrument like this before using it, of course. In other words, you need to know how much energy is generated by a pair of win known rate. It will help determine the mathematical relationship between wind speed and electric current, so you can find the speed of a wind unknown in simply measuring the current.
