Opinions On Digital Anemometers
January 27, 2011Some people think wind turbines are dangerous due to winds and storms could run dangerously fast. This is not true: all large wind turbines are equipped with brakes that prevent when the wind blows too hard (and integrated digital anemometer to measure velocity as well.) But there is no doubt that wind turbines spin faster and produce more electricity, more the wind blows. You have no idea how an anemometer base could work.
Suppose you build yourself a table model turbine and connected to an electrical generator (actually, an electric motor wired backwards, so it is an electric current when you turn around its axis). The faster the turn the pages, faster turning the alternator and the electrical current is produced. So if you measure the current, you have a fundamental way to measure wind speed. You have to calibrate such an instrument before using it, of course. In other words, you need to know how much energy is generated by a pair known to gain speed. This will help determine the mathematical relationship between wind speed and power, so you can find the wind speed in an unknown, simply measuring the current.
